On 6 October 1990, the Discovery shuttle launched the joint ESA-NASA deep-space mission Ulysses at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The Ulysses was established in Germany to study space areas affected by the Sun and its magnetic field — the heliosphere. Its main objective is to carry out the first measurement of undetected areas over the Sun ' s polar poles. For this reason, it operates in an elliptical heliocentric orbit, which makes it higher than the zodiac plane, each orbit lasting 6.2 years.
In order to enter this special orbit, the 809-pound Ulysses (367 kg) must be supported by solid rocket engines. Together with the main spacecraft, they are loaded into the payload module of the Space Shuttle. They were set on fire after their release from Discovery.
